Mikala Austin

Public Health Fellow

Mikala is a second-year student pursuing an MPH in Global Health with a concentration in Infectious Disease at Emory University. She possesses a diverse background in global health, having led and supervised groups of over 30 students across multiple international locations, such as Albania, the Dominican Republic, and Panama. In these capacities, she collaboratively engaged with local community partners to execute primary medical clinics and health promotion initiatives for local schools situated in some of the world’s most marginalized and under-served communities. Moreover, her professional experience as a Senior Microbiology Technician and Public Health Laboratory Assistant, both with the County of San Diego and Infinity Laboratories, has greatly improved her skills in the scientific and technical aspects crucial for maintaining the highest standards of healthcare testing and working with infectious diseases. She is currently interested in exploring a range of global health challenges, with a particular interest in areas pertaining to WASH, infectious disease, program/project management, and laboratory-based public health surveillance.
