He has provided strategic leadership and technical oversight while working extensively across Nigeria, Pakistan, and countries in the Eastern Mediterranean Region, where high-quality data and real-time insights are essential for program impact and sustained interruption of wild poliovirus transmission. His work bridges strategic planning, operational excellence, and evidence-driven decision-making for large-scale public health interventions.
Dr. Akerele is recognized for developing and scaling innovative data science applications that enhance health system performance. He has led nationwide implementations of interoperable immunization data systems. His expertise spans R-based analytics applications, automated dashboarding, real-time surveillance tools, and translation of complex datasets into actionable insights for ministries of health and global partners. Dr. Akerele’s combined expertise in public health informatics, data science, and digital strategy has measurably improved the use of routine immunization data, elevated surveillance quality, and supported targeted immunization campaigns reaching millions of children globally. His role continues to advance data modernization agendas with government partners and international agencies, strengthening information systems that underpin resilient health programs and improve health outcomes at scale.
He holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Public Health, specializing in epidemiology and medical statistics, from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria and has authored several peer-reviewed studies.
