Hepatitis in Kyrgyzstan

Serosurvey of Hepatitis B and C Virus in Kyrgyzstan

2024-2025

Integral Global (IG), in collaboration with the Kyrgyz Ministry of Health, the U.S. CDC, and international partners, is supporting a national population-based serosurvey in the Kyrgyz Republic to assess the prevalence and risk factors of hepatitis B, hepatitis C, hepatitis D, and HIV infections. This large-scale, cross-sectional study aims to generate representative data for both children and adults to inform the country’s progress toward disease elimination targets. The survey includes household interviews, blood specimen collection, and laboratory testing for viral markers, genotypes, and co-infections.

Key activities include coordinating the international transport of blood specimens to the Lugar Center in Georgia for serological and molecular testing, facilitated through collaboration with local laboratory staff and transport companies. Training and joint testing sessions for Kyrgyz lab specialists at the Lugar Center have been organized to build local capacity. The project also supports the development of a national information system and has contributed to drafting Kyrgyzstan’s national program for the prevention and control of blood-borne hepatitis and HIV. Additionally, logistical and scientific coordination is maintained with CDC, including updates on sample confirmation and manuscript review.

With rigorous ethical oversight, comprehensive field operations, and a robust laboratory and data management system, this effort will provide critical evidence to guide national policy, improve access to care, and strengthen the public health response to bloodborne infections in Kyrgyzstan.

This year, IG is expanding on the previous year’s activities and training 6 primary care facilities across Kyrgyzstan on HBV express testing, vaccination, and reporting and 2 laboratories on in-depth diagnostic algorithms. IG will also conduct monitoring visits at 33 laboratories sites across the country on their implementation of the electronic accounting system and diagnostic algorithms.
